There are two types of rotary gap. sync and async. Sync fires
at the same point(s) along the AC 60Hz waveform. Sync speeds
for motors are exactly 1800 or 3600 rpm. Async rotaries are
usually variable speed. Sync rotaries can get the most out of
a small NST powered system. Large pig or PT systems can
use either type of rotary. There's some rotaries at my website at:

shows my new Minisync Rotary Gap.
Some static gaps can give similar performance to a rotary for
small and possibly medium coils.
