depends on its application...
a shunt for lets say a DC amp meter will look like a 4" long ( this is a big
shunt..) 1" wide piece of insulative phenolic material with 2 bolts ( one
on each
end) with a piece of copper or brass metal ribbon between the bolts... the
"ribbon"
is specifically engineered to handle a specific amount of current and it will
produce a specific amount of resistance... the result is a small amount of
voltage
produced to power the meter... some higher power shunts will have 2 or more
ribbons
stacked to increase the power capacity...
other shunts may be a thin wire wound around a heat resistant core...
