NST's from sign shops

Just wondering...
If you get a used NST from a sign shop, how good is this?  I mean how long
would you expect it to last?  They are returned to the sign shop because
something was wrong with them weren't they?  If you find a good one what
kinds of problems could cause it to be returned (repairable)?
