GM HEI coil sources
Original poster: "by way of Terry Fritz <twftesla-at-qwest-dot-net>" <Tesla729-at-cs-dot-com>
Hey all,
I have a question about where to obtain reasonably priced HEI
coils for a possible future TSG coil project. I like Greg? tend
to want to be a settler and not a pioneer. I've already spent
a fortune trying to be a pioneer :-( I finally successful-
ly constructed a 10 kVA pole pig driven ASRSG Tesla system
a couple of years ago and it's still operating reliably to date.
That's definitely a longevity record for me. In my earlier days
of coiling, I didn't have the benifits of this list (heck, I didn't
even have a PC) so I wasted a whole bunch of money on
NSTs from opening up my SGs too wide to get bigger sparks
from a near resonant sized primary cap tank circuit. I also
"detonated" a lot of non-pulse rated HV caps trying to employ
them in Tesla service. Anyway, I'm really taking interest in this
TSG thing for a smaller 4" coil project and I'm kind of waiting
for Terry and "weazle" McCreath (hope I spelt that right) to per-
fect and standardize a TSG circuit and then build that circuit for
the SG of my coil project.
Now that I've got that off of my chest, I was wondering where
most of you guys are getting these GM HEI coils at a reasonable
price. The local Autozone has some "generic" HEI coils, but they
cost around $50 each and that just seems a bit steep to me! Do
you have to go to the local auto junk yard and tear one out of a
wreck to get it at a reasonable price? I was thinking more along
the lines of around $20 to $25 for a new HEI coil. Is that an un-
reasonably cheap expectation?
Thanks for any Help,
