That can work fine. Just don't use too much power input.
It's probably best to run at a high break rate, by using a small
capacitor and a narrow spark gap setting. For example you
could use a 0.0015uF cap or so, which would hold the spark
length down to about 12" or so. Another option is to space
wind the wire, and make the coil 12" tall, then you'll be able
to get 2 foot sparks or more without breakdown, and use
a larger capacitor, etc.
