Hi Vince,
I see others have addressed power dissipation and time constants. There is
one more thing to consider, which is the voltage breakdown of the resistor
itself. Most common resistors are rated for 250-350 volts, but can probably
handle 500 volts safely. Thus, it would be wise and safer to string 4 or 5
resistors in series across each of your caps.
