A triode can't replace a spark gap any more than an
apple can replace an orange--they just aren't the same
thing. However, a big triode can be the basis for a
vacuum tube tesla coil. The nearest tube-like
equivalent to the spark gap is the thyratron, and
you'd need a big one to approach spark gap
performance. Large thyratrons are well outside the
hobby-level budget, unless you happen to find a
suitable surplus unit. Even then, they are special
beasts that require a bit of know-how to get them to
work right. Some thyratrons have rather specific
biasing and triggering requirements.
