Have you had a look at richie Burnetts site ? All the info you need on
ballasting is there. I have tried a welder transformer on a "piglet" 8kv
250mA tranny and found that the regulation isn't that good. It will get very
hot very quickly. Far better to find an old core and wind on about 200 turns
of 8 or 10 wag insulated wire on ,and play with the gap while monitoring the
current. I can send you the details of my ballast if you like ,but I don't
think it is at all critical. Sorry haven't got the link to Richies page
handy.
