The educated of Columbus' day knew quite well that the earth was
round (This gets badly mishandled in education....).
[humor note: I misspelt Columbus as Coulombs. hmmmmm)]
The objection to Columbus was that he claimed to he headed
for Japan. Given that (since the days of ancient Egypt) the
roundness AND a good idea of the circumference were known,
Columbus was NOT going to make it to Japan. (insufficient
food...). The objection was to his ignorance. He lucked out
& stumbled into another continent. (Or maybe he pinched
navigation info from the Vikings.... But he SAID he was going
to Japan and the distance there was known & he wasn't gonna
make it...)
It's Possible that Tesla saw 'an unknown continent'. I suspect
he did not, but...
