Just thought you might like the input.
 I experimented with a coherer many years ago
when I got  a large jar of iron filings for playing with magnets. My set up 
was very much what you described but I used two 8-32 brass screws that 
allowed me to easily set the gap. Do you see any
Tesla related application? It is an interesting plaything from the early days 
of the technology.
