Bob,

Those are good parts you found.  I would begin with the glass tube,
so you can see what's happening inside.  If you want the longest
possible sparks, power the coil with raw AC.  If you want a shorter
plasma-like spark, use filtered DC.  I suppose a 3-1000Z can give
about a 24" long spark using raw AC.
