Hi there
A varia will give adequate control over current, but cut throught the core
of the variable ballast completely before you connect it up to stop it from
saturating. Make sure you dont get any swarf from the cutting in the
winding. If I get you right you have a stak of 3 10A ones to give 30A. You
could pull 10KVA through one 10A variac, but Id keep the runs under a
minute, or get some more bigger variacs.
