Erik,

This may sound crazy, but have you considered a "lazy susan" bearing? The 
sell them to deal with incredible weights. There is a place called woodcraft 
near me that sells them with capabilities of up to 500 lbs. They aren't 
really expensive either. just 2 round pieces of 3/4" plywwood, some screws 
and one of these bearings, and you can spin that spool all you want!
