Phillip,
Maybe the NST's are failing. You could try making the gap
narrower, and see if the coil runs steadier. This may suggest
that the NST is failing. If the NST's are failing, they probably
won't last long. Of course you may be able to revive them by
melting the tar, or removing the tar.
