To me, the danger lies with what the operator doesn't know or what they
choose to ignore.
To me, a tesla coil isn't quite as "Dangerous as say a running chain saw."
When running a chain saw, I could have a charley horse, I could suddenly
sneeze or lose my balance or any number of uncountable events could occur
that could cause a mishap. I am a LOT closer to the unit than I am when
running a coil so if I pass out, I could just flop down and land on the
chainsaw.
When running my Tesla coil, I stay well out of range of the streamers, and
unless I decided to have a siezure, and flop over stiff as a board, I am
unlikely to come into contact with the primary circuit.
For the most I would have to make a conscous descision to walk up to the
coil and place my hand on the unit to get hurt.
Imagine a sword in the hands of a five year old with fantasies of Ninjahood
and the same sword in the hands of a professional. Which would you prefer to
be next to. I'd prefer the professional.
