   I think your wire will do fine.  There just might be a slight error in 
calculations due to the spacing and the insulation material properities, but 
it should work just fine.  
   As for your primary,  you could easily go with much closer spacing - say a 
quarter of an inch.   Many use just a quarter of an inch spacing with quarter 
inch diam. tubing.  Since yours is 3/8ths in. diam., you can even get away 
with narrower spacing if you really wanted to.
