snipperz...
Hi Will....
certian types of secondaries can produce a healthy shock after the power is
turned off... and
sometimes they can even produce some rather stiff jolts when they arent
even near the rest of the
coil. It seems the material that the secondary is made of has a tendency to
increase this ability to
retain voltage. My lexan 8" forms are quite capable of holding a charge for
quite some time, but my
12" sonotube doesnt. I used the same coating material on both types of
tube, so I am guessing that
the tube itself is the determining factor as the component that allows
charge retention.
If you want to get a real nasty jolt .... turn off the coil , remove the
ground from the
secondary, let it sit a while and then pick it up off of the coil platform
and allow the secondary
wire on the bottom of the coil to contact your leg while holding the
secondary with both hands....
this will drop you to the ground and render your leg useless for about 5
minutes :) ( been there
, done that, sold the T-shirt for capacitor money) ....
as far as shocks being harmless ... I consider any shock to be not good (
if it causes pain then
something went wrong , but then not all shocks are painful sooo I avoid
them all :) )
