Re: Liquid N2-Where to get it?

Hi All,

I originally didn't post this since it seemed off-topic but since there is so
much interest in superconductors and LN2 cooled gaps...

BTW - Always were liquid proof safety gloggles with LN2. If you carry it in
your car, keep all the windows rolled down for super good air flow since LN2
gas can displace O2 and make you dizzy... Always have very good ventilation
when working with it too. It does not take much to reduce the percentage of O2
to the point where you will pass out. - Terry

Hi Matt,

I didn't post this to the Tesla list since I did not see how it was related to
Tesla coils.

LN2 is all over the place. Ask your science teachers at school (I guess school
is out for the summer...). Look in the yellow pages under gas and call around
explaining that you are looking for a little LN2. Look around for welding and
welding gas places who probably have LN2 sitting around. They will all help a
kid doing a science project or tell you who will. Get on the phone and start
calling is the best way. You can also call regular welders who will not have
it but they will have "friends" in the business.

Many gas places will give you like a 5 litter dewer for 10$ a week rent for the
little dewer thing. They sort of cater to the walk-in LN2 crowd :-)) This is
nice since you get a big thing of LN2 that will last a week and they get to
charge you a little for it so everyone is happy. Ask for a "small 5 liter
dewer" and they will think you know what you are doing. Here, we can get
dewers just for asking and a little money at the big gas place...

The standard vacuum thermos is about as good as it gets. Try to get the steel
shatterproof kind as opposed to glass. Put a hole in the lid to let the
pressure escape or it will explode if the lid is on tight. Of course, the
official dewer is far better if that is the deal you get.

The cost of a litter of LN2 is like nothing. They may charge you five bucks
for their time or something like that... I think it is like $10 for a five
liter dewer and a few more bucks for the LN2 here. We used to get big 300
litter dewers for like $75 but that was all labor. The gas is free but
everyone just has to pay the salaries...

Cheers,

        Terry
