I have tried that. The ignition points will not stand up under the high
voltage and
current of Tesla operation. It's fun to try, just use a variac and start out
at a very low setting
so you can watch the points melt. ;-))
I drive the cam with a low voltage DC motor so I can vary the speed. You can
make a great spark coil or a motor-driven switch.
