Lolly Stick MHD motor - File test

By way of trying out Terry's new file area*, here are three pictures of a
recent MHD experiment we did.

We made a small submarine crawler drive style MHD motor from four lolly
sticks, a couple of pieces of roofing lead for electrodes, copious
quantities of electricians tape and four small neodymium-iron-boron magnets.
As you can see from the photos, it did work - the images were taken when the
device was being run at 38 volts and approximately 3 amps. However, I think
that most of this power was doing electrochemical stuff and also simply
heating the water, because the flow rate was quite low and quite a
substantial amount of gunge was emitted from the motor. The motor emitted
variously insoluble white gunge and insoluble black gunge - as we were
running with a fairly concentrated solution of salt (sodium chloride) these
are presumably lead compounds.
And while I'm at it - happy new year!
