Perhaps 3-phase Tesla coils might produce a really odd
effects. Maybe that what the three balls are that you see under some
pictures of supposed UFO's.

Hi All,
I appreciate the clean, clear experimental descriptions in much of the
list which allow peer review, replication of results, and corroboration. I
also se how easy it might be to slide into the New Age Twilight Zone of
Tesla-worshippers who take his every musing as revealed divine truth, to be
rediscovered by the faithful, now that he has "gone to a higher
resonance".;-))
I have read, read, and re-read Harvey Norris' 2847-word manifesto on
polyphase coils, UFO's, and the Hutchison Effect, including all links to
other references. The term 3-phase Bipolar still seems oxymoronic to me, but
parts of it are lucid. Based on the long run-on, redundant, semi-connected
structure of the presentation itself, I am inclined to view the paper as more
of a bipolar phenomenon (per DSM-IV). The links are IMHO definitely to the
L-fringe of science and engineering.
While Hutchison's work has not yet risen to the level to be included
in Prof. Wm.F.Williams "Encyclopedia of Pseudoscience" it bears all the
hallmarks of those that appear therein and in Prof. Robert Park's "Voodoo
Science - the Road from Foolishness to Fraud", and in Prof. Richard Dawkins
"Unweaving the Rainbow - Science, Delusion, and the Appetite for Wonder"
These include: paranoia, conspiracy theories, extravagant news releases,
claims of persecution by gov't agencies, anecdotal evidence from unnamed
"respected" sources and those no longer available to be questioned, missing
equipment, phenomena which are non-repeatable except by "believers" in the
absence of "skeptics". "The Philadelphia Experiment" referred to in defense
of the "Hutchison Effect" is, of course, a well-known hoax, as its
originator, Carl Allen, admitted on several occasions. Newsmen from ABC and
CBS have been used over the years by the perpetual motion, free energy,
psychic energy hucksters when those with little scientific background are
looking for a human interest story for "entertainment value" as Dan Rather
has admitted. (Network TV News programs and talk shows are not scientific
corroboration.)
I myself claimed "government persecution" (at least to my classmates),
as a result of my first experiments with a small Tesla Coil while in High
School (1959). There were indeed government agents going around looking for
me using vans with special antennas. The reality was not agents out to steal
or suppress my secrets, but rather that my coil, which was on the roof of a
friend's apartment building, was putting out about 200 W and was resonant at
455 kHz- thereby raising hell with every cheap, poorly shielded AM radio in
the neighborhood. (The secret agents were from the FCC and I was severely
warned to cease and desist.;-))
With both mirth And misgiving,
Matt D.
