Hi Dennis,
I go to the neon shops. Very often they will just give me a few cutoffs of 
3-5 feet.
More than enuff.
Alligator clips make poor, unreliable contact.
Also, I find that I handle them using two hands with one hand on the clip and 
the other hand headed where it shouldn't go. Not healthy. Alligator clips are 
dangerous. Use 
solder lugs and/or homemade wirenuts.
