Formless secondaries Was: RE: Ryan's Coil = DOA :(

The trouble I see with this is that a non conducting form with baffles or
with no wire going inside, helps prevent arcing inside the coil. The air
inside of a secondary without a form might become ionized faster than the
air outside of the coil because there is less circulation inside than
outside and the air is completely surrounded by highly charged windings and
might have a lower break down voltage. Without the form, one might have arcs
inside the secondary where you can't see them! With a properly made form
that is thick enough to prevent puncture, the only sparks you have to worry
about are the ones you can see on the outside and one can employ a strike
rail on the outside as well. So, IMHO, a form is actually a good thing to
have.

Hmmm...Anybody thought of making a secondary with NO form?Well at first use
a
form but use some kind of compound to hold it together like papermache over
the form and then slide it off and remove the paper. This would be diff. and
fragile but I leave it up to those who have time and MONEY for this sorta
thing.

just a thought,
