You may find something interesting at my website at:

There there's theory for number of turns and why, etc., and a coil 
that gives 42" sparks from a 12/30 NST. Sync rotary gaps, etc.

I recommend not passing the wire though to the inside of the secondary.
The more power you run, the more likelihood of problems that way.
The wire won't pull loose if it's coated with the polyurethane or some
other coating.
