You should be OK. I have heard that whatever is used to color the ABS pipe
black can make it slightly conductive, but I used it for a small secondary
and didn't have any problems. As for varnish, some people varnish the form
before winding, but I don't think its really necessary as long as you clean
it thououghly. I would, however, put something on the outside to protect
the wire and hold it in place. I use fast-drying polyurethane. It is runny
so you will need many coats (10-20) and a jig to constantly spin the coil
(20-60 rpm is good) so that it doesn't drip.
