Ohio Teslathon 2001
Original poster: "harvey norris by way of Terry Fritz <twftesla-at-uswest-dot-net>" <harvich-at-yahoo-dot-com>
Tentative date for this is MAY 2001, on a weekend.
This year I will arrange for a spring event for the
front driveway, with inside garage space for weather
considerations. I will make available the use of the
dual bus alternator 360 hz 3 phase alternator system
driven by a 240 volt 5 hp AC motor for experimentation
with interaction between three tesla coil
secondaries, if we can get three coilers willing to
commit to this project. Otherwise we can use
conventional 120 volt 60 hz input for the event.
As the many readers of the tesla list may know I
have forwarded some unusual propositions, some that
have proven illusory regarding scope observations, and
even several blunders in interpretation of scientific
facts where others have pointed this out to me. But
hey this is still a learning experience and being
wrong is often part of the experience!
In the very least I can show coilers the
interactions of bulbs as interphasal loads with
resonant delta loads in 3 phase, and how those load
actions always seem to prefer two pathways instead of
three, or even one predominant pathway. Of course that
might not make sense to theorists, but neither does
sending the primary oscillations from 3 of them to a
single secondary. Dont think anyone would want to
waste time there on that idea of producing a total sum
cancellation on a single secondary!
How this 3 phase would work with 3 tesla coils is
what I would like to investigate, whether a three
phase discharge among secondaries can even be made to
begin with.
In this delicate balance I have 4 variacs: one for
the alternator field and one for each of the phases to
be supplied to each tesla coil primary after passing
through a 10/1 3 phase step up transformer from the
alternator input.. This will give up to 400 -at-360 hz
volts in probabililty, this being downsized for the
requirements of each primary transformer one each
tesla coil .It is hoped that triple variac control can
regulate the three coils simultaneously to achieve
this balance. The typical balance problems might be
circumvented by the fact that each phase can be truly
isolated from the other because these are isolated on
the output stator. That in itself is normally deemed
unnecessary, but it does give the "purist" approach a
try. It was an expensive option to make the stator
outputs this way which involved going in and removing
the normal 3 phase connections between stator output
windings.
Plans like this need a lot of coordination
especially if we could get three similar coils to
drive. So I thought I'd post this early in the year to
see the interest amongst Ohio coilers. I know I had a
note last year from a coiler wishing his regrets at
not being able to make it. So I guess now is the time
to sign up for the boat!
What I meant in some postings about a rotating
bipolar arc(if I posted that) is that with hf arcing
between two opposite potentials in 3 phase, that in
itself could rotate across the phases, would be the
equivalent of a rotating high frequency phenomenon.
Guess a wye central arc wouldnt allow that. So perhaps
a triple delta arc sounds good enough to try for
starters. Im sure everyone will get home the same way
they came!
Sincerely Harvey D Norris
