Alex: Here's my two cents worth. Maybe it'll help. A Tesla Coil is in
essence a resonant air core transformer. The Cap and the Primary coil make
up a resonant LC (inductor/Capacitor) tank circuit. The LC circuit will
resonate at some frequency depending on the values of the cap (mfd) and the
coil (microHenries). The secondary is tuned (Someone please correct me if
I'm wrong on this) to either the exact frequency or 1/4 of the LC resonant
frequency and extracts the energy from the tank circuit. The spark gap
actually serves two functions: It puts energy from the power transformer
(NST, Plate, etc..) into the tank circuit and also serves as a bi-polar
switch allowing the energy in the tank circuit to flow back and forth though
it. The effect is similar to ringing a bell. The energy from the power
source flowing trough the spark gap is like the clapper in the bell. The
LC circuit is the bell and rings at it's resonant frequency. The secondary
extracts the energy from the circuit. Much like a wine glass that shatters
when the right musical note is struck. Mike O.
