Hi Jake, 

Yes, plate transformers of sufficient output voltage to reliably fire 
a spark gap make good Tesla power supplies. However, you must 
also remember that plate transformers, like pole pigs and potential 
transformers are NOT current limited by magnetic shunts like NSTs 
and MOT trannies (partially), so you'll have to provide some type of 
external inductive and/or resistive ballasting to use it as a Tesla po- 
wer supply, as the SG effectively shorts out the transformer.
