To be finicky:
A dynamotor is a single unit set, with two sets of brushes
and armature and one set of field windings. Commonly used to
create B+ for tube operated equipment in a DC environment in
'the old days'.
A motor generator set is a two unit machine, with separate motor
and generator machines, coupled together. Each design scheme has
its advantages. Big ones were used in RR work, in multi MW
sizes.
