I, too, have seen my share of _blank_ movies due to some obscure or proprietary
codec used. As an excellent reference work with more than anyone would ever
want
to know about codecs, please take a look at this page:

The choice of an _old guard_ codec would ensure a fairly low common
denominator.
The author mentions "Cinepak is the most widely used Video for Windows codec."
