Ry, 
 Diesel or kerosene are probably as good a choice as any.  Gasoline works, 
but is too flammable.  Mineral oil works well, but is probably more 
expensive.  I'd choose diesel myself(cheap)..I worked putting down hot tar 
roofs one summer while in college.  Diesel (or Kerosene) works nicely for 
dissolving tar - We used to clean up our tools with it..
