Just an idea because I am not a specialist.
In the way when the spark gap is put in parallel with
the transformer, after the spark gap quenching, in the
cap it is possible to remain a rezidual charge. The
potential on the cap can add to the HV transformer
voltage,in the next cycle, giving a higher tension at
the ends of the primary coil. So, when the spark gap
fires again, the voltage across the primary coil will
drop from a higher value, inducing a higher tension in
the TC secondary.
