Running resonant makes your NST seem more powerful
than it really is.  60Hz (or 50Hz) resonant rise in
the tank circuit can give higher firing voltage (if
you open the spark gap wider).  Reso operation can
also pull more current from the NST, even with the
shunts still in.  This mode of operation is hard on
NSTs and tank capacitors, but the tradeoff is the
possibility of higher performance.  You can moderate
it somewhat by keeping the spark gap at a sane
opening.
