If I understand what you are saying, you do not switch in the phase control
circuit until the motor has spun up without the phase control circuit. If
this is so, don't you have a potential problem with the motor seeing an
abrupt phase shift in its power supply when you do switch in the phase
control circuit?

I have the rotary gap and capacitors mounted near the coil. About 8 feet
away, I have the variac for controlling the power to the nsts and the phase
control variac. I fire the system up with the phase control variac set at
zero (no inductance) but the capacitors are connected full time across the
motor. Once the motor has come up to speed, I adjust the phase control
variac.
