An easy method (not new and I'm sure mentioned on the list)
Get a small solenoid of wire (I used a reed relay coil lots of turns is the
deal)
Place a nail thru the coil and put a magnet against the nail (on the end
away from the rotor)
Place te head of the nail as close the the rotor as you can without hitting
the spinning electrodes.
As the electrodes pass the coil/magnet/nail a small current will be induced
into the coil.
A scope and mains waveform reference and your there
