I don't see any attempt in those papers to model the gap correctly. 
When considering k of 0.6 it actually doesn't matter but it certainly 
matters for a typical loosely coupled TC (0.1 - 0.2). I would say 
that is where our concern lies. I wrote a piece several years ago 
analysing the implications of the linear decrement and posted it to 
the list several times. It should appear under the heading "Primary Q 
- a brain teaser". It pointed to a clear direction for primary design 
- a high capacitor voltage and high primary inductance for best 
transfer efficiency.
