Erik,

comp board or particle board works fine.  BTW, I've hardly bought
any wood in the last 20 years, I find it in the street.  There's always
old entertainment centers, desks, coffee tables, as well as plain
wood stock, thown out here and there.  The only wood I had to buy 
was maple and oak.

Treenails....    I use wooden dowels at times to avoid the use of metal.
