Hey Garry, all, The tubes use a coating that, as Terry stated, emits light in the visible range when exposed to ultraviolet light produced from the mercury vapor(I think) that is inside the tubes. Maybe what you are looking for are phosphors. They produce visible light when exposed to electrons. Sam Beck
