HV measurements
Little Sensor with Big Prospects
The Electro-Optic High Voltage Sensor may transform the way high-voltage
electricity is measured. The EOHV Sensor is safer, more efficient, up to 30
times cheaper and up to 100,000 times smaller than the potential
transformers it replaces. The sensor deduces voltage from polarized light’s
behavior in a crystal sensitive to electric fields. Ultimately, the sensor
could be used for metering, power quality monitoring or wherever engineers
need to measure an electric field, such as in microwave and radar
applications. The sensor earned engineers James Davidson, Gary Seifert, and
Thomas Crawford of DOE's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental
Laboratory a 1998 R&D 100 award.
