Jim/All,

I've done the timing light trick using a NST and small spark gap (Just
clipped the timing light on one of the HV leads). Works OK but the RS idea
sounds a lot cleaner.

Another idea is to use an automotive timing light.  You'd have to cobble up
some sort of line synced trigger circuit.
