IMHO, 
Yes, you need a strike rail. A strike rail simply is an RF point source
situated around the perimeter of the primary "should" an arc from the top
terminal strike towards the primary. I have had *many* hits down to the primary
and I am extremely happy I built in a strike rail right from the start.
