I don't have a definitive answer.

But remember that the arc is not isolated in space.

The Primary took a heck of a wallop/belt, i.e. current pulse
a hundred times greater that secondary peak current.

It's pulse nature may induce/activate nearby structures to 
re-resonate/radiate at much lower frequencies - like for 
example the housewiring ground, a hundred feet or so
until it gets to real earth ! Due to radiative coupling
any metal in your house may be experiencing similar activation.

On a bridge walkway a sign read: break your walk stride frequently
the rationale: don't activate any resonance's that may tear up the bridge !

The stride may be analogous to the TC gap burst rate which may 
vary considerably depending upon your gap type, 
variac setting, incoming voltage variation, spark loading, etc.

Your LW radio is sensitive to uV's and vulnerable via the AC mains
conduction of TC transients directly to audio circuitry or 
intermediate RF amplifiers. 

Radio Amateurs frequently find the audio amps in offending radios are 
simply rectifying their signal. Especially in close proximity.
Clicks would be a cinch !

Hi Dale,

Well, is this good news!!! I hardly can wait to put my coil together and do
some measuring! What I don't understand is, how is it possible to hear
cracking on the radio LW-band when coiling when there is no radiation on
that frequency?
