Bob,
Usually, beginners build a small simple TC to get used to them
and how they behave, etc. Depending on your finances, you may
want to keep the cost down too. Many folks start with an OBIT or
NST powered coil. The secondary can be cheap PVC pipe found
in the garbage, the spark gap can be made from scrap pipes, etc.
A coil like this can be built cheaply, esp if you use salt water
caps to start. A coil like this can give 10" to 20" sparks or more.
