No, the size of the rod in your salt water solution should not have
any appreciable effect on your capacitance. The only thing that
you really have to concern yourself with, regarding rod size, is to
make sure that it is robust enough for the heavy RF currents that
are generated by the tank circuit. For a small NST driven system,
a 1/4" dia. brass or copper rod should suffice. The capacitance is
only affected by the surface area, type, thickness of your dielectric.
The dielectric, in this case would, be your bottle or jug.
