Heck, there are even "Circular Mils" used  as transverse area measurements
and they are also used to rate large size wire and cable:  for example: 400
MCM is 400,000 circular mils in area.

1" = 25.4mm
1mm = 0.03937"

1mil NOT = 1mm

1 mil = 0.001" (mil is the abbreviation for 1/1000 th)
