TT-42 Project Completion
Hello Coilers,
After a slight problem, I finished up the project and got 42" sparks
from the coil. The coil can be operated either with or without a
breakout bump on the toroid. With the bump, the coil gives one 42"
streamer. Without the bump, the coil gives multiple streamers of
about 38" to 41" or so.
During tuning, a massive racing arc formed near the bottom of the
secondary coil and destroyed 1.5" of winding. I removed this ruined
wire portion, and spliced in a new wire. This time I made the winding
1/4" shorter to reduce the coupling a little. (I can't easily change the
coupling by raising the secondary on this coil because of the design.)
By shortening the winding in this way, it not only loosened the
coupling, but corrected the tuning also by coincidence. This was
fortunate, because this # 10awg solid wire primary is difficult to tap.
This project was built in order to create a simple and portable tabletop
TC of relatively light weight and good performance. Key elements of
the design are; the sync rotary gap, properly sized capacitor, and
compact smooth toroid.
