I use the formula:

    spark length (inches) = 1.7*sqrt input power (wallplug watts)

Your NST is rated at 270 watts, but using a sync gap, and a
step up type variac (140V out), the NST is capable of drawing
about 486 watts.

    1.7*sqrt 486 = 37" or so maximum spark length.
