Hi Ryan,
The 17 ga. wire will be fine. Not sure what the specs are on the other
components, but I would definately go for the 8 inch secondary about 37 to 40
inches long. This will put you in the ball park of 750 - 800 turns, an h/d
ration of 4.5:1 - 5:1, and an inductance of 22 - 24mH. You should be able to
mesh the rest of your components into the circuit with a little primary
modification.
