Like all other combustable materials, it does not burn without the
presence of oxygen. If you were to try to ignite pure hydrogen without
any O2 it would not burn. There are devices in existance that you can
buy that do this. They contain such a high percentage of hydrogen that
there can be no combustion. spark gaps and thyritrons come to mind. They
are somewhat rare, but they do exist.

Mix H2 and O2 for killer fuel. Most rocket motors use this today. ;)

I certainly hope his gap is airtight.
