	Have thought of using silicone rubber sheet, which would have a more
uniform thickness than what you propose.  Haven't gotten around it
because of innate laziness plus the twin concerns of its realative
softness plus wondering what will happen on the inside where the gasked
will tend to be exposed to pretty high temperature gasses.  

	Another thing I have wanted to try is some of the asbestos-based
gasketing material for exhaust fittings, etc.  I have used it for other
gasketing purposes but not this particular one.  Problems are that it
will require a sharp die to cut properly, since it's quite brittle, and
also that, because of the graphite with which it's impregnated, possibly
conductive.  It's on my list though, along with neating up my study and
cleaning up the garage and etc. ...........
